Four guides on one page of results give four different answers for the same character, and the right one decides whether you are holding a part Ford cast or a part Ford sold.

Pull a cylinder head off a Windsor and you will find a string of characters cast into the iron. Feed it to any Ford part number decoder and the chart hands back a decade, a year, a car line and a department. What almost none of those charts tell you is that the fourth character, the one that looks like an afterthought, decides whether the number you are reading came out of a foundry or out of a parts catalog. Get that backwards and everything built on top of it is built on sand.

One 1965 Mustang cylinder head can legitimately wear two completely different numbers, and both are correct. Neither is a typo, a reproduction stamp or a fake. They belong to two numbering systems Ford ran side by side for forty years, and the hobby has spent decades flattening them into a single chart.

What a Ford Part Number Decoder Actually Reads

Every classic Ford number breaks into three pieces: a four character prefix, a basic part number of four or five digits, and a suffix. Written out it looks like C5ZZ-6049-B. The prefix says when the design was released and who released it. The basic number says what kind of part it is. The suffix says how many times that design has been revised since.

The first character is the decade. A is the 1940s, B the 1950s, C the 1960s, D the 1970s, E the 1980s, F the 1990s. The second is the year inside that decade, so C5 reads 1965 and D4 reads 1974. Every chart gets this part right and it is genuinely useful, because it puts a hard floor under the part. Nothing carrying a C9 prefix was drawn before 1969.

The suffix is the design level. A is the part as originally released, B means it changed once, C twice, running up the alphabet with I skipped and continuing into AA past Z. A high suffix letter is a quiet hint that Ford kept fixing something.

The Third Character Is the Car, and It Is Not the Fourth

The third character names the car line the part was drawn for. A is the full size Ford, D covers the Falcon and later the Maverick and Granada, O is the Fairlane and Torino, S is the Thunderbird, W is the Cougar, G was the Comet, L is Lincoln, M is Mercury, T is the truck line, and Z is the Mustang.

Hold on to that last one. Z in the third position means Mustang, the most recognized letter in the system. That is exactly why it causes the trouble that follows, because Z turns up again in the fourth position meaning something else entirely.

The Fourth Letter Is Where Every Ford Part Number Decoder Splits

Run the search yourself and read page one. Eaton Detroit Spring, sitting at the top of the organic results, lists the fourth digit as the design engineering office and gives Z as Mustang 1964 to 1973. Google's own AI summary of that same page gives the fourth character as Z equals general or body. Old Cars Weekly gives it as Ford specific. FoMoCo.org, further down, gives it as Ford Service Parts.

FoMoCo.org has it right. So does MustangTek, which states flatly that service parts use Z in the fourth position while original castings carry their proper engineering designation, and so does FORDification, which reads it the same way. Three independent sources agree, and the two that disagree are the ones ranking highest. Eaton's answer is the third character's meaning pasted into the fourth column, an easy slip to make and an expensive one to inherit.

Engineering Numbers Versus Service Numbers

That letter tells you which of two parallel systems you are in. Engineering numbers were assigned by the department that designed the part and cast or stamped into the part itself, so the factory could identify it on the line. Service numbers were assigned by the parts and service division and printed on the box. FoMoCo.org puts it without hedging: numbers used for ordering should not be confused with engineering or casting numbers, and they are not interchangeable.

The fourth character is what separates them. E in that position is the engine engineering group, C is body and electrical, P is automatic transmission, R is manual transmission. Z is not an engineering group at all. Z says the number was issued by Ford service, and Y is its Lincoln and Mercury equivalent.

So the block in a 1965 Mustang carries C5AE cast into the iron, because the engine group drew it for the full size line first, and that same block crossed the parts counter as C5AZ. One casting, two prefixes, one letter of difference. Read Z as Mustang and you will decide the counter number is a Mustang specific piece, when what it actually says is that this is the service number for something drawn for another line entirely.

The Basic Number Names the Part, Not the Engine

The middle group is a category, not a serial number. 6015 is a cylinder block, 6049 is a cylinder head and covers all of them, 6303 is a crankshaft, 9424 is an intake manifold. Broad ranges organize the rest: 6000 to 6898 is the engine assembly, 9421 to 9499 the manifolds, 12000 to 12425 ignition.

On side specific parts the last digit carries one more piece of information. An odd number is the left or driver side, an even number is the right.

Now count the block numbers on that same page of results. EngineLabs and MustangTek both give 6015 as the cylinder block. FORDification lists 6010 for blocks. Old Car Parts NW prints 6019. Three numbers, one part, three guides, and not one of the three pages acknowledges the other two. The split is less sloppiness than the engineering and service divide surfacing again in the middle group. It is the same trap we found in big block Chevy casting numbers, where four charts disagreed on year ranges by as much as seventeen years for a single casting.

Reading the Casting Date Code

Near the part number you will usually find a shorter cluster of four characters, and that one is a date. The format is year digit, month letter, day. A is January and the letters run to M for December with I skipped, so 6M08 is the eighth of December in a year ending in six. Ford also ran a second cycle in which N through Z covers the same twelve months.

Two cautions come with it. The date code does not encode the decade, so 6M08 could be 1966 or 1976 and only the part number prefix will settle which. And the prefix year is the year the design was released, not the day the iron was poured, so a block carrying a C5 prefix can honestly show a date code from late 1964. Production starts before the model year does.

Do not extend the alphabet on your own, either. Google's summary continues the decade letters to G for the 2000s, but Ford had abandoned the scheme by then, rebuilding the prefix around a leading digit just before 2000, so a 1 opens 2001 and a 9 opens 2009. A letter first prefix is a classic era number.

What the Number Cannot Prove

This is where a Ford part number decoder stops being an answer and becomes a filter. A correct prefix tells you the design existed by a certain year and was drawn for a certain line. It does not tell you the part left the factory attached to your car. Ford sold service parts under these numbers for decades after the cars were built, which means a numerically perfect head might have been bought new in 1978 and bolted on last spring.

Date codes work in one direction only. A casting dated three months after your car was assembled disqualifies it outright. A casting dated three months before proves nothing, because that same range was correct for every other car built that week and for every replacement pulled off a shelf since. What builds a real case is agreement across several independent marks: the part number, a date code sitting sensibly ahead of the build date, and the rest of the driveline telling the same story.
